If you are planning family holidays in Rome with kids, we recommend you to stay in the areas of the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Barberini or via Veneto.
Why? All these areas are within walking distance of Villa Borghese, the «green heart» of Rome. This park is ideal for family vacation and entertainment. Here you will find playgrounds and attractions for kids, a kid’s park train, tandem bike rentals for the whole family, a puppet theater and a cinema for the little ones, and even a biopark, the first zoo in Europe where animals began to live without cages.
It is an ideal place with lots of entertainment for kids and adults during the day and a quiet place at night. All the main attractions are within walking distance, and if you get tired, there are metro stations and taxi stands nearby.
Where to stay in Rome? Also a good area for living in Rome with kids is Piazza Navona, the Pantheon or Campo dei Fiori. The only downside is the lack of parks and playgrounds in the vicinity.
We do not recommend staying in the areas of the Colosseum, Trastevere or Termini. There is nothing interesting in the Colosseum area except the Colosseum itself. Trastevere is one of the popular hangouts in Rome, and the Termini station area is not so good in terms of safety.
We also do not recommend you choosing sleeping areas for your first trip to Rome. Busses in the Eternal City go according to their own very specific schedule. Moreover, public transport strikes are very frequent here. It may happen that you will spend your precious time on vacation waiting for a bus or paying for a taxi. Save your time and nerves and choose areas in the historic center of Rome. Yes, it will be more expensive, but your impressions and comfort are priceless.
When booking an apartment in Rome, make sure the building has an elevator. In many historical (and not only) palazzo there is no lift and going upstairs to the fifth floor on foot with a kid is not the best way to spend your vacation.
